This Sunday, about 188.5 million American viewers will watch Super Bowl LI, with 11 percent set to buy team apparel or other celebratory accessories. A number of celebrity fans will likely be in the stands on both sides of the ball. The question is who will show up in the stands or at the many parties that lead up to the event to cheer on their team. With Lady Gaga as the halftime performer, there should be plenty of head-turning personalities in Houston this week.
Atlanta Falcons: Soaring High
Many stars who call Atlanta home or have ties to Georgia are Falcons fans. The long list of Falcons aficionados who are rappers includes Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, Usher, Big Boi, Gucci Mane, Jermaine Dupri, T.I., Young Jeezy, Ludacris and Andre Benjamin, aka Andre 3000. Usher and Ludacris are both style icons, each having a unique “gentleman”-like approach to formal wear. Both Ludacris and Andre 3000 are also designers. Each started their own clothing line. Andre 3000’s line, “Benjamin Bixby,” now on hiatus, received recognition for combining preppy items such as rugby jerseys and hoop socks with bomber jackets and waistcoats.
Country star Zac Brown of the Zac Brown Band and former president Jimmy Carter are Falcons fans, as are TV host Ty Pennington and comedian Jeff Foxworthy. Actors who support the Falcons include Michael Kelly, Samuel L. Jackson and comedian Kenan Thompson of Saturday Night Live.
On the sports side, Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton and former heavyweight boxing champion Evander Holyfield will both be rooting for the “Dirty Birds.”
New England Patriots: Won't Be Deflated
The long list of actors who will be cheering on the Patriots includes Ben Affleck, Matt Damon, John Krasinski, Kurt Russell, Jim Caviezel, Chris Evans, Michael Chiklis, Maria Menounos and Kate Hudson. Gisele Bündchen, supermodel and wife of Patriots quarterback Tom Brady, is also a notable Patriots fan. Bündchen has her own lingerie line, Gisele Bündchen Intimates.
The members of Dropkick Murphys, an Irish punk band, and singer Steven Tyler of Aerosmith, are Patriots fans. Tyler has long been a fashion icon but just launched his own line in 2011. Tyler was the inspiration and one of the guides for the Andrew Charles bohemian-gypsy style clothing line for men and women. Tyler’s androgynous rock and roll looks include animal prints and leather. Andrew Charles is curated by Andy Hilfiger, the brother of Tommy Hilfiger.
Elton John is also a Patriots fan. This is in large part because he is friends with Robert Kraft, the team’s owner. In 2016, Elton John and Lady Gaga partnered to create Love Bravery, a fashion and accessories line that benefits Gaga’s Born This Way Foundation and the Elton John AIDS Foundation. The clothing is adorned with colorful emblems of John and Gaga’s performances, from pianos to sunglasses, as well as the word “Love.”
TV host Conan O’Brien and Mark Wahlberg are Patriots fans as well. In 2015, Wahlberg launched a limited clothing line for Indian motorcycle. Today he is part of the design team for TICDA (“Today I Can Do Anything,”) an inspirational clothing line meant to inspire young people.
